Methodology
What each figure means
| Field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cost | The estimated startup cost to reach your first paying customer, in US dollars, including equipment, licensing, and platform fees. |
| $ / month | A realistic monthly earnings range for part-time work, before taxes and expenses. Results vary widely, and most people land in the lower half of the range. |
| hrs/wk | The weekly time commitment the earnings range assumes, including unpaid work like admin, travel, quoting, and invoicing. |
| Effort | A five-step scale of the skill required. Beginner means anyone can start today. Moderate means a few months of deliberate learning. Expert means professional-grade skill, a degree, or years in a trade. |
| Remote / Hybrid / In person | Where the work physically happens. Hybrid means a meaningful share of it can be done either way. |
| Passive / Semi-passive | Whether income continues when you stop actively working. Passive means an asset keeps earning after the work of building it. Semi-passive means it keeps earning with light maintenance. Everything else is active. |
| Time to first payment | The typical number of days from starting to getting paid, including any licensing and approval waits. This figure feeds the sorting and filters. |
Where the ideas come from
Every idea in this index was found by searching the public internet for side hustle ideas that real people discuss and recommend. We aggregated ideas from Reddit communities, online forums, blogs, YouTube, and submissions from readers of this site. The figures attached to each entry are estimated ranges for part-time work in the United States, built conservatively and checked against platform payout terms where a platform is involved.
What the warnings mean
Some entries carry warnings that appear inside the entry, under the description. Here is what each one means.
| Warning | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| License required | You need a license, certification, or background check before anyone can legally pay you. |
| Car needed | The work depends on a reliable vehicle, and your insurance may need to cover driving for work. |
| Check your local rules | Licensing, tax, or insurance requirements vary by state and city, so look yours up before you start. |
| Crowded market | A lot of people already offer this, so expect lower prices and a slow start. |
| Watch for scams | This kind of work attracts scammers. Never pay anyone to give you work. |
| Volatile earnings | Earnings vary sharply month to month, or the work is seasonal. |
How the index is organized
Similar ideas are grouped together. Freelance writing, for example, is one group with several entries inside it, because writing blog posts, writing grant applications, and writing medical content pay differently and call for different skills. Each entry carries its own figures.
There are currently 2,403 entries across 536 groups and 25 categories.
Sorting
The default sort order follows votes from users of this site. You can also sort by highest paying, lowest startup cost, or easiest to start. The filters let you narrow the list by category, cost range, earnings range, effort level, location type, income type, and time to first payment.
