How to use this site

Side Hustle Index is an aggregation of virtually every side hustle idea that gets mentioned publicly on the internet. We pulled from Reddit, forums, blogs, YouTube, and reader submissions, and organized everything into one searchable index of 2,403 ideas so you can sort and filter based on your own needs, constraints, and criteria to find the side hustle that fits you best.

Sorting and filtering

The quick-filter buttons above the table let you narrow the list immediately. Tap Remote to see only work you can do from home. Tap No startup cost to see ideas that cost nothing to begin. These filters combine, so selecting both shows only free, remote options.

The Filters button opens the full set: category, startup cost range, earnings range, effort level, and how quickly the first payment tends to arrive. The count above the table updates as you filter, so you always know how many ideas match your criteria. You can also sort the list by highest paying, lowest cost, or easiest to start.

What the figures mean

  • $ / month is a realistic earnings range for part-time work, before taxes and expenses. Results vary widely, and most people land in the lower half of the range.
  • Cost is the estimated startup cost to reach your first paying customer, including equipment, licensing, and platform fees.
  • hrs/wk is the weekly time commitment that the earnings range assumes, including unpaid work like admin, travel, and invoicing.
  • Effort is a five-step scale from Beginner (anyone can start today) to Expert (requires years of skill, a degree, or a professional license).
  • Remote / Hybrid / In person indicates where the work physically happens.
  • Passive / Semi-passive indicates whether income continues when you stop actively working.

For a deeper explanation of every figure, see the methodology page.

Upvote, comment, and submit

You can upvote or downvote any idea, and the default sort order reflects those votes. Comments are open to everyone without needing an account, and they are sorted by votes so the most useful ones rise to the top. If you have firsthand experience with a side hustle listed here, your perspective is especially valuable.

If you know of a side hustle that is not in the index yet, you can submit it using the Submit button next to the filters. Every submission is reviewed, and the ones that check out get added to the index.
